Self-Portrait

My camera ruined its quality badly.

My self-Portrait assignment, it's kinda crappy cause it looks unfinished. DX and yes doesn't show much of my personality, more like what exactly I wanna be.

About book jacket illustration

What is exactly a book jacket? A book jacket is also known as Dust Jacket used to cover the book on the its cover. Illustrated by a picture relevant to the story inside the book along with the title to support the readers about the direction and genre of it. It's not simple as it is, these illustration can attracted many attention from the readers when they lay eyes on it. Depends on the design of the cover, and how well that one single illustration can tell readers a brief storyline or an emphasis of the book.

At first, book jacket never exist until the 1820s it's not intened to be beautiful looking but to put a huge stack of unbound printed which they called a book at that time together as one with the title of it. Back then books are very expensive and even more valuable when they're binded together. By the end of 1820s it becomes commonplace for the publisher to pre-bound their books and sell them stiffened by the board covered with cloth or paper. Unlike nowadays with digital tools, the artists use only a simple line, silhouettes, and geometric shape with a few colors, it's no possible to make some colorful cover at that time till some years later. In 1830s the book jacket is used to protect the cover of the book and seal with wax.

After a period of time, book production have become cheaper and cheaper, but the mass production technique in 1900s make it more expensive, later in 1950s , book jacket has become a very important recipe for the marketing tools in order to attracted customer attention when they set their first sight on each books make people who has a particular interested noticed what they want easier.

One of the inspiration came from an American artist name Tony Diterlizzi.

He wrote several children books and illustrated the pictures by himself and he also known for his materpiece The Spiderwick Chronicles and the adaptation of the same series which he is the executive producer. His works are mostly traditional drawing which suits children books very well in a unique way and also can fit in his own stories.

One of the Spiderwick series and the first. this picture will give people the atmosphere of the past and history using the combination of pencil drawing and the complete colored section, it also gives an idea of some creation at the renaissance period especailly the background. In my own opinion, this book jacket work fine with the book and the title. The pencil drawing is like a guide to the creature anatomy and since this is a fantasy novel it supposed to be fantasy creature also that is on the cover.

Here is one of Tony's early artwork in 2005, this picture can tell the audience various meaning but for what I see is the harmony between human and creatures, even though in this one it's a dragon which supposed to be mean , and muscular but instead it rather chubby and smart looking. The colors in this picture is very adventurous with all the strong contrast between background and foreground and those natural colors are very charming and relaxing in its own way.

This one is an exact illustration style using for a children novel name Kenny & the Dragon in 2008. Talk about friendship and heart warming masterpiece, this really give those feeling and it can slowly grow more and more on you. The piece is purely a traditional work as I can see except the title, the soft colors on it and a light brownish background is totally a classic. It can give the sense of harmony also.

For the last one, this piece gives me the image of The Wizard of Oz with all these characters, but instead of saying it's a reincarnate of it I would say it's quite very new story, this also one of a few digital art from Tony. the picture is very well compsed and very easy to understand what the story is all about and who is the main characters of it. Simple but meaningful.
